Mosque Foundation

Completed in 1981 at a cost of $1.3 million and renovated in 1999, the Mosque Foundation is one of the largest mosques in the Chicago area. It has attracted controversy in recent years due to allegations of support for Hamas, Saudi government financing, and misappropriation of mosque funds (mostly for Palestinian causes). The mosque has long been under federal investigation and has had bank accounts closed, though no charges have been filed. Former president of the mosque (and spokesman) Oussama Jamal denies all charges against the ISNA-owned mosque. Up to 1,500 attend Friday prayers and the mosque has a long history of interfaith activities, though there were notable threats to the mosque after September 11.

★★★★★  This is the model for all masjids in Chicagoland. Constantly growing and expanding, the Mosque Foundation is a masjid that goes beyond just providing a space for prayer. Its offshoots which all surround the masjid include an elementary school, high school, youth center, and more. The imam, Shaykh Jamal, is well-respected and the amount of programming that goes on at the masjid everyday is amazing. As a footnote, the description above is outdated/misleading as their zakat every year goes to local families in need in the US.
