Masjed-e-Noor: ★★★★ A small, friendly masjid that is clean and well-maintained. Plenty of Tablighi Jamaat brothers but welcoming to all. (Submitted on January 18, 2014)
Islamic Center of South Florida: ★★★★★ Very friendly masjid - I came by for Isha and the people there welcomed me to the community and South Florida, recommending places to eat and visit while also telling me about the history of the masjid and upcoming events. There is a very nice playground for kids and an active social calendar for the whole family. There's even a family of cats that live there, that's how warm and friendly this place is. I was told that they will, inshallah, be moving in the next few years to a larger property that is currently being developed. (Submitted on May 3, 2013)
Masjid Jamaat Al-Mumineen: ★★★★★ I visited this masjid while on vacation but missed the actual prayer. Considering that it was a random weeknight, the attendance was very strong. The parking lot was packed with brothers and sisters socializing after prayer and it seemed like a very diverse group. The custodian of the masjid kindly unlocked the door so I could pray - the masjid itself is clean and well-kept and has a ping-pong table on its patio! As I left, the brothers who waited to lock up the masjid after I was finished informed me of the prayer times and invited me to return again soon. Friendly masjid! (Submitted on December 5, 2012)
Islamic Foundation of South Florida: ★★★★★ Beautiful masjid, the sort of masjid one would expect to see in a Muslim country. As a tourist passing through, I stopped by for isha on a Friday night and found the masjid to be packed - there was a dinner being held for the returning hajjis and evening classes being held for kids. Plenty of brothers and sisters present and a few of them gave me a tour of the facility - ample prayer space for brothers and sisters, classrooms (used for a full-time school, evening classes, and a sunday school) soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, a cricket pitch, a playground, and a plot for a new prayer space. The masjid has picnic tables on a nice patio for community meals with fountains....I could go on. This seems like a very active masjid with full family participation and a vision for the future. Masjid Miami Gardens: ★★★★★ Fantastic masjid! A bit of a hike from Miami but well worth it! Beautiful masjid, diverse congregation, good khutbahs, and a really strong community feel. Everyone stays after jumma and samples food from the 4-6 vendors outside dishing out halal food from all over the world. People gather at picnic tables on the masjid grounds making it feel like an iftar every Friday. (Submitted on March 13, 2012)
Masjid Al-Ansar: ★★★★★ Saw this masjid while driving down the highway, really glad that I stopped in! Strong and tight-knit community with lots of activities like community dinners and social events. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming! (Submitted on March 13, 2012)
Masjid-e-Abubakr: ★★★★★ The best thing about this masjid is that it serves an area that desperately needs as a masjid. If you're working at Masonic hospital, a tourist in Wrigleyville, or anywhere on the near North Side, this is your best and possibly only option. As it caters to people who work in the area rather than a local community, it's jumma prayer is so fast that you'll have time to eat and get back to work on time. (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Makki Masjid: ★★★★★ This is a very active masjid serving a large but very tight-knit group of Muslims who live in the surrounding area. Many events and announcements are in Gujurati but the new imam has been adding many new English programs and programs aimed at the youth. This masjid also serves up really good iftars in Ramadan and is packed for its taraweeh prayers. (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Masjid-e-Rahmat: ★★★★ This is one of the best of the famous "Devon Ave Basement Masjids." The first masjids in Devon were converted basements where locals would come downstairs or down the block to pray. While some eventually grew or coalesced into larger masjids, this one remained true to its origins and is worth checking out to get a real neighborhood experience. At prayer times, you'll see people in flip-flops making their way down the street and into an alley to get to the main entrance. (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Shariah Board of America: ★★★★★ Shariah Board is a masjid that is run by a group of Islamic scholars led by the famous Mufti Naval-ur-Rahman. Mufti Sahib spends the winter months speaking before hundreds of students in Hyderabad (India) but his summer home is here in Chicago. He is usually the khateeb for Jumma and also holds an informative and often-times witty Q&A; session in Urdu afterwards. The masjid is also home to a girls school and a group of scholars who certify local restaurants and slaughterhouses as zabihahah halal. A definite perk of coming to this masjid is the small parking lot - very helpful if you're tired of Devon street parking. (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Masjid e Ayesha Siddiqah: ★★★★ The entrance to this masjid is very nondescript so make sure to look carefully. It runs beneath three adjoining stores on Devon so don't be fooled by the small entrance - this fairly large masjid is home to a growing community of Muslims who are sympathetic to Sufi brotherhoods like the Qadri and Chishti orders. Muslims of all types are welcome but the masjid provides a safe space for Thursday night zikr (remembrance) sessions that are led by a Qadri sufi scholar. Aside from Thursday nights, you can see this masjid at it's fullest on the anniversary (urs) of Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani or during the month of Rabi-al-Awwal when many ceremonies are held in honor of the Prophet's (S) birth (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Masjid e Faizan e Madeena: ★★★★ This small but friendly masjid is home to the Chicago branch of the international Faizan-e-Madeena movement - a group based out of Pakistan that seeks to encourage Muslims to increase their love of the Prophet (s) and engagement with his Sunnah. Thursday nights are a good night to visit as you can see their group zikr (remembrance) and partake in a delicious meal afterwards. (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Islamic Center of Naperville (Al Hilal): ★★★★★ This is a newer masjid for Chicago but it is already a model for many older and more established communities. This a diverse community with a well-functioning board and clear goals for the future. The masjid is home to many innovative activities like a monthly youth program and special events designed to involve the 30-something crowd in masjid decision-making. They also have a hifz program, cooking classes, and tutoring program among others. The organization has even broken ground on a brand new community center and gym. (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Masjid Al-Huda: ★★★★★ Very lively masjid serving the growing Schaumburg-area community! Home to a weekend school and many other educational activities. The local imam has one of the best voices in Chicagoland! (Submitted on March 10, 2012)
Masjid Al Farooq: ★★★★★ This is a beautiful and growing masjid! They recently moved to a new location with a large prayer hall (men and women are separated but there is no physical barrier) and classrooms for a weekend Islamic school. The community is very welcoming and the imam, Ousmane Drame, is knowledgeable and delivers excellent, relevant khutbahs. Even the substitute khateeb for times when Imam Drame is called away to speak elsewhere gives consistently good khutbahs. I've also had some of the best suhoors and iftars ever at this masjid where I've been able to try all sorts of West African and African-American home cooking. (Submitted on March 8, 2012)
