The beautiful Monterey Bay Area owes much of its diversity to the presence of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, which recruits instructors from all over the world. Many of these instructors are from Muslim-majority countries whose languages are in high demand. This, in turn, has resulted in a thriving Muslim community with Halal restaurants and masajid.
Muslims living in the area are primarily from Afghanistan and Middle Eastern countries, which is reflected in the culinary scene.
