SUNNI Close to the border of South Australia. Mosque is located at the corner of Williams Street and Buck Street. In the 19th and early 20th century Broken Hill was home to a community of Afghans who worked as camel drivers in parts of outback Australia, and they made a significant contribution to economic growth when transport options were limited. The camel drivers formed the first sizeable Muslim communities in Australia, and in Broken Hill they left their mark in the form of the first mosque in NSW in 1891. Broken Hill City Council acquired the land which houses the mosque in 1967. It was rededicated by visiting Muslim officials as a place of worship on 26 September 1968, and is still used for worship today.
