★★★★★ As the mother of a young Muslim girl, it was very important for me to find an Islamic Sunday School that reflected both my love of Islam and my deeply held convictions of equality and respect for women and girls. In Cordoba House Sunday School, I have found both and more. Cordoba House Sunday School teaches young Muslims with compassion and dignity and joy. Girls and boys learn together with respect for each other. Girls are not segregated or forced to cover or sit in the back or shamed in any manner. With this, there is also a strong Islamic and Quran Studies curriculum. Children are taught Arabic and tajweed from qualified, vetted teachers who undergo teacher training and formal curriculum development in-house. There is instruction in salaat and surahs with an emphasis on understanding the meaning rather than just rote memorization. Students are taught about all the Prophets, the Angels and all other core aspects of our religion. The director of the school is passionate about conveying spiritual understanding and not just the motions, connecting our faith with our modern life. Very young children are taught through stories and art to engage them rather than lecturing to them. Older children are taught to ask questions without fear. There is a music director at the school because children learn well through song. Lastly, there is an active parents community who share values and a desire to raise our children in a joyful, tolerant and respectful Islam. We just began our second semester there. My daughter who is still only 4 years old practiced the first two Arabic letters today, prayed salaat in jamaat with her fellow students led by her teacher, listened to stories about our Prophet and was also singing a song by Yusuf Islam. Most importantly, she was happy and enthusiastic about her teachers and class. As a mother, I really can't ask for more. Posted on September 30, 2019
