SUNNI The UK Islamic Mission (UKIM) was established in August 1962 on the initiative of a small group of Muslims who felt the need for a British based organisation, which would convey the spirit and meaning of Islam to the western world. Nearly 5 decades later, this organisation has expanded to over 45 branches. Madina Masjid situated on Forest Street, Nelson is one such branch and has been serving the community since 1974 providing a place for prayer, education, marriage solemnisation, funeral facilities and much more. A single shop was purchased, later expanding to acquire the two adjacent properties. These buildings are now insufficient and inappropriate for their purpose. They are incorrectly orientated for prayer, have a lack of dedicated car parking, and although there is not a lack of space per se or major structural defects, it is not feasible to adapt the building nor is it necessarily capable of providing the facilities required. Following consultations with the local community, the Masjid committee made the decision to embark on a search for a suitable site to construct a new purpose built Masjid.
