SUNNI The Belfast Islamic Centre was established in 1978 and serves the estimated 4-5,000 Muslims in Northern Ireland representing 40 countries around the world. In addition to providing a place of worship, the mosque serves as a community centre, a social-cultural centre, a resource centre, advice centre and a day-care centre. Due to inadequate facilities, the community is planning the construction of a new mosque in the near future. The Belfast Islamic Centre is a registered charity organisation, run by an elected executive committee, elected every 2 years. Their website is one of the oldest of any mosque, online since 1995.
