★★★★★ The mosque is clean and occupies a house near the UT-Austin Campus with basketball hoops and some limited parking. There is a separate building behind the mosque for sisters but also a large space dedicated to them in the main prayer area itself that is separated by sheer curtains. The community seems active and draws on the college students and UT-Austin professors. When I visited, there was a great presentation of Islam to non-Muslims in the main prayer area. ★★★☆☆ This Masjid isn't Traditional Sunni. Salafis lead all the prayers, and they give short speeches after Maghrib. We have recently tried having a Traditional Imam, but that didn't work out due to unrelated reasons.
Everyone in the Masjid is friendly, however, with the regulars, the students, and a few elders. There is a bit of tension between some Salafis and Traditionalists, however, it doesn't affect the unity of the prayers, the Traditionalists are fine praying behind the Salafis.
There are 2 Jummah's. The first is usually led by a Salafi, and the second, which is at 2:05 PM, is usually led by a Traditionalist. This is not by custom or rule, it simply has been like that. Salafi's and Traditionalists go to both first and second Jummah, there is no obvious divide within the community. First Jummah is always packed, and second is usually lacking.
I can't speak for the sisters, but I would rate their accommodation as average at best. They have a makeshift curtain separating their area in the back of the Masjid, giving them about 2/5th's of the small Masjid we have. Women do come to both Jummah's. There is also a recently renovated Sisters Activity Center in the back of the Masjid that will hopefully be utilized by the sisters soon. Posted on April 25, 2007 |
