A very unique mosque. Main Road Mosque was built in the late 1800's in what was then a predominately Muslim area of Cape Town. After surviving the Aparteid era, this mosque is very popular with a wide cross section of society. Everyone from the working class, Islamic scholars, and those with alternate lifestyles find a spiritual home here. Across the street from Pick and Pay.  Last updated 2 years ago

★★★★  I've been visiting Cape Town regularly over the past few years and find my spiritual home in this city at the Main Road Mosque. It's located a short walk from my wife's home in Claremont. It's a small place. Land is at a premium here, so the mosque could not add additions over the years. Khutbahs are in Eglish, with the majority of those in attendance being from the English/Afrikaans speaking Cape Malay community. One feature that may shock and dismay those of us who come from more conservative backgrounds is this mosque's version of a 'ladies section'. Women pray both upstairs and on the main floor side by side with the men. There is no partition, only a thin rope separating the men from the women. A man could be praying next to or behind a woman. Overall, it's a nice place to be. It seems to welcome people of all persuasions, races and 'lifestyle choices'.
