Niwi Masjid (sunken mosque) is one unique historical wonder situated inside the walled city between Shahalmi Gate and the Lohari Gate, in the Koocha Dogran of Nayya Bazaar. The building of this individual-style mosque is centuries old, which was constructed 24-feet lower than ground level. This scribe visited this wonderful mosque and also met its imam, Hafiz Muhammad Siddique, who has been leading prayers here for the last many years and collected some information about the mosque. According to a 2011 report from the Pew Research Center, 63 percent of America's estimated 2.75 million Muslims are immigrants -- with as many as 90,000 new Muslim immigrants arriving each year. Experts say it will be years before the pool of American imams becomes large enough to meet demand from mosques. American-born imams are nearly impossible to find. Ads from mosques seeking imams who are fluent in English are readily found in Muslim-American magazines and newspapers. The North American Imams Federation, an advocacy group founded in 2002, gets more than 100 requests for help every year from mosques seeking religious leaders. (More here...)

Typically, to find the location of Mecca for the necessary five prayers per day, the world's 1.6-billion Muslims might use a Qibla compass or a street sign. Outdoorsy types might use the sun's location or moss on the trees. But in a world of ubiquitous GPS, surely there has to be a better, or at least nerdier, way. Enter the Soner Ozenc Product Design Studio, which has crafted a prayer mat fit for the modern needs of any gadget-loving believer. Nicknamed EL Sajjadah – EL for "Electro Luminescent" and Sajjadah for "prayer mat" – the fantastic fabric is gathering donations right now on Kickstarter, although it's still significantly short of its $100,000 realization point. NFL players Hamza and Husain Abdullah might be best known for training while still observing a pillar of their Islamic Faith, fasting during the month of Ramadan, which coincides with the NFL training camp each year. This year, the Muslim brothers will put their NFL careers on hold to observe another pillar of their faith, the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) taking place during the 2012 NFL Season. In preparation of their pilgrimage, the Abdullah brothers have arranged a “30 Mosques in 30 Days” tour to take place during Ramadan, which begins on or about July 20. During Ramadan, Hamza and Husain will travel across North America to promote interfaith dialogue and to deconstruct the negative connotations often associated with Islam. (More here...)

Hundreds of children's books spill over the rim of boxes. Others are scattered on the floor next to hardcover dictionaries and histories. As Ann El-Moslimany leans on her cane and scans the library at the Islamic School of Seattle (ISS), she sees thousands of other books still sitting on shelves, where she wishes they could stay. It's difficult for El-Moslimany, 74, to accept that the Islamic school she helped start in the Central Area 32 years ago - one of the nation's first - has closed. Soon after the school opened in 1980, more than 120 students attended. But that was the peak, and by this last school year, enrollment had dwindled to about 20. Final classes were June 12. An appeals court has granted permission for the construction of a grand mosque in France's second-largest city of Marseille to meet the religious needs of the sizable minority. “The case was in the hands of the courts, we had total confidence,” Abderrahman Ghoul, the head of the Marseille Mosque association, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Muslims have planned to build a grand mosque in Marseille's northern Saint-Louis area. The mosque was granted a permit in September 2009 but construction was suspended following complaints from local residents and businesses. A community association led by a local butcher had filed a complaint against the mosque on claims that the Muslim worship place did not fit with the surrounding urban environment. (More here...)

The second installment in a series of reports based on the U.S. Mosque Survey 2011 released today indicates that Islamic houses of worship are 'healthy and growing' and are engaged in a high level of educational, interfaith and outreach activities. A coalition of major American Muslim and academic organizations sponsored the comprehensive study of mosques and the attitudes of mosque leaders in the United States from which the latest report, titled 'The American Mosque 2011: Activities, Administration and Vitality of the American Mosque,' was compiled. Many people might think that mosques are no place for drug addiction treatment, but those responsible for setting up a noteworthy drug treatment clinic in a mosque think it can be done - and are demonstrating the importance of religious leaders tackling social problems at the same time. The clinic is a brainchild of Dr. Mohamad Hussain Habil, Program Director at the Centre for Addiction Sciences (UMCAS), based at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia currently struggles with how to treat addiction, and is estimated to have 350,000 drug users. Faced with the need to provide drug addiction treatment services for drug users living in nearby low-cost housing areas that were both inexpensive and accessible to the community, the UMCAS team hit upon the idea of using mosques as service delivery points. A group of private Saudi divers said they had built what they described as the first underwater mosque in history and that they performed prayers inside it just after it was completed, according to a newspaper.
The divers used massive plastic pipes filled with sand to construct the symbolic mosque under the water off the northwestern town of Tabuk close to the border with Jordan, Al Madina said.
One of our colleagues came up with this idea last summer and we decided to carry it out, diver Hamadan bin Salim Al Masoudi said.
We have just completed the construction of the mosquewhen we put the final touches on it, it was time for afternoon prayers, so we performed group prayers in the first underwater mosque in history. (More here...)

When our friends Bassam Tariq and Aman Ali came to us with an idea for exploring 30 mosques in New York City boroughs during the 30 days of Ramadan, we were only too happy to help. Their project was based on the idea that many Muslims rarely stray out of their comfort zones to explore how other Muslims from other racial, cultural, or sectarian backgrounds celebrate one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. It's a concept we have shared as we've tried to introduce mosque-goers to the variety of mosques in their area beyond those they may be familiar with. As Tariq and Ali began documenting their journey - using salatomatic and zabihah.com to highlight mosques and restaurants - they began attracting significant media attention from the likes of NY1 TV, NPR, Canada's CBC and websites Boing Boing, Sepia Mutiny, and Global Voices. The full account of their visits, broken down by borough, include interactions with imams, worshippers, and passers by of remarkable diversity, in a way that only New York City could produce - a testament to the diversity of America and of Muslims from the world over. For those of you who spend more time here than at our sister site for halal restaurants, zabihah.com, you might think that you'd like the same functionality for mosques - finding them from your GPS-enabled mobile phone - that you'll find for halal restaurants on our new zabihah iPhone app. Well, take another look. Our zabihah for iPhone app, which has been available since early June, also includes full functionality for mosques, meaning you can also find the nearest mosques to your location. Even better than that is the release this month of version 1.5 of zabihah for iPhone, which adds over a dozen new features, including logging into your account, adding reviews, listings, and photos, or editing existing information, all for the low price of $0.99. There's also zabihahLite, the free version of our iPhone app, which has many of these features as well. (More here...)

We've received so many questions in the past few days, I thought it would be best to answer the most common ones here:
I can't find my mosque! What kind of site is this? It is a user-driven site that depends on you, dear reader, to help build and maintain the database. While we are busy adding mosques on our own (there are still about 500 mosques & schools that are being added by the salat-o-matic team over the next week, and we're aiming to go over the 1000 mark soon), if you don't see your mosque, you can add it and make our job a lot easier.
How do I add a masjid or school? Just navigate to the area where the masjid/school should be, then click on the "Add Mosque" link in the upper right corner.
What kind of review should I leave? Try to be as constructive as possible - this site is meant as a positive resource for Muslims and the institutions that serve them. Overly harsh or critical reviews, with sweeping generalizations, slurs, or accusations, will be removed. Also, this is not a place for theological debate.
Please make sure to read our FAQ for more answers to your pressing questions. (More here...)
