Islamic Da'wah Center: ★★★★ This mosque is large, beautiful, peaceful, and immaculate. The khutbahs are in English and very practical. It is mainly attended by people working downtown. The main men's area only fills about half way or two thirds on Fridays. There is also a balcony level which is always empty. Unfortunately, very few women come, although they seem to have adequate facilities (I haven't seen them from the inside so I can't say for sure). The parking lot is small, but the location is in walking distance from most of downtown and is right next to the Preston rail stop. My main complaint is that the people were not the most welcoming (no one has said hello or salam to me in the few times I have been there); this has sadly been the case at most mosques within the city. Insha' Allah this will change as more people discover this mosque. Highly recommended to people living or working near the light rail. (Submitted on March 24, 2009)
ISGH Main Center: ★★★★ This is a recently renovated mosque inside the 610 loop. There is bus access and the new Richmond rail line will run nearby. The facilities are clean and well designed. Women pray in a separate room with a glass partition allowing a view of the main hall, as well as in the rear of the main hall without a barrier (although the men sometimes put of plastic folding chairs as a delineation). There is a classroom and a hall where dinners are frequently held. The congregation is relatively small and consists mainly of Arabic speakers. Insha' Allah, the convenient location will begin to attract more people of different backgrounds. The imam is very kind and sometime gives a short talk after regular prayers, not just a Friday Khutbah. (Submitted on March 24, 2009)
Galveston Islamic Society: ★★★★ I went here once for Jumah while in Galveston for a conference. The mosque is in walking distance from UTMB. The imam was extremely friendly and greeted people as they walked in. His khutbah was very practical. The facilities were clean and well maintained. The congregation is small and did not come close to filling the space. I do not remember what the women's area was like; perhaps someone else can elaborate. I have not been back since Hurricane Ike and also hope it has survived, both physically and spiritually. (Submitted on March 24, 2009)
ISGH Masjid Al-Ma'adah: ★★ Small mosque next to the VA. Lots of people in a small space make it cramped and loud, particularly on Friday. The khutbah is an Arabic with a brief English translation and was not very practical the few times I went there. Women pray behind a curtain, I think, but I can't actually remember ever seeing any there. Bathroom and wudu facilities are adequate but not the most clean. On Fridays, people park on the median on the street outside because the lot is so tiny. Mostly Arab and a few Indian/Pakistani members. I'm not sure why this mosque attracts so many more people than the others in the area; maybe it's just that more people know about it. I would recommend the Dawah Center downtown (take the train) or the mosque off of Richmond (ISGH main center) instead. (Submitted on March 24, 2009)
Minhaj ul Quran: ★★★ This is a small, slightly dilapidated mosque off of Route 80. The main prayer hall is in the basement down a steep flight of stairs. Services are in Urdu with an English translation. There is a new imam from India who lives upstairs from the mosque. He speaks little English, but he is knowledgeable and friendly. Women pray in a room on a different floor. I don't think there are many of them. (Submitted on March 24, 2009)
