| Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood: ★★★★ This is one of my favorite masjids; I used to come here every Friday when I was working in the City. Imam Talib 'Abdur-Rashid knows how to give a good khutbah and the congregants are generally easygoing. My only complaint (which may be all in my head) is that because I'm white I get the vibe that people here are eying me with suspicion that I'm an informant. On the other hand, I am Shi'ah, pray with a clay turbah and did not get any flack or comments while there.
I would definitely recommend this as the "go-to" masjid if you are in New York. (Submitted on August 18, 2010) |
| Sunni Rizvi Jamia Masjid: ★★★ This is not a bad masjid. I am Shi'ah and I have never experienced any hostility/bloated egos here. They work hard putting together many programs throughout the year for both the Muslim and community at large; the last time I checked, other masjids in Jersey City weren't doing anything to work with non-Muslims and help others learn about Islam. My only complaint is that they need more English programs as the masjid is not in Pakistan; I can't tell you how offended I am as an American Muslim when people come to this country and don't bother to learn the language as if their fellow citizens aren't worth their time. How can you share Islam with this mentality?
And to the folks below, last time I checked it was makruh to start a new congregation in a masjid for both the Shafi'i and Maliki madhhabs. I don't know what you practice, but you shouldn't be letting a Shi'ah teach you your own fiqh ;-) (Submitted on May 17, 2010) |
| Masjid Al Mumin: ★★★ This masjid is part of a tightly knit community, mash'Allah; as such, the brothers seem to be a bit suspicious of visitors/newcomers so make sure your pants are rolled-up before you go to pray to prevent any fitnah. (Submitted on January 28, 2010) |
| Islamic Society of San Francisco: ★★ This masjid was a huge dissapointment. First of all this masjid and three others are in the worst part of San Francisco where you can have a nice conversation with bums and crack-addicts on the way to the masjid. Secondly, my wife and I came here to pray maghrib one night and had to wait for 10min after the salaat for somebody to pick us up but we were kicked out for merely sitting next to each other in the back of prayer hall. I think they should have bigger concerns as you can see many strip clubs and people urinating on the street when you look out the windows of the musulah. (Submitted on February 23, 2007) |
