Islamic Foundation of Toronto: ★★★★★ Islamic Foundation is surely among the top three Islamic Centers in the GTA area, possibly top-five in all of Canada. It is bustling with people, young and old, foreign and local, converted, reverted, perverted what have you. Fantastic building, spacious and has a fabulous library inside too. Hosts numerous small conferences and educational events through-out the year. Two of the biggest Islamic Bookshops in the GTA area are right next to it as well. (Submitted on December 13, 2007)
International Muslims' Organization of Toronto: ★★★★ IMO is one of the more active islamic centers in the GTA. It consists of an entire wing of a large office building that has been redone as a masjid. Looks quite spacious and elegant, albeit not necessarily very Islamic in decor. Imam Slimi is the in-house Imam and he is apparently some kind of a scholar, so he does many programs and even produces some Islamic literature. There is quite a bit of housing in and around IMO, which is good, plus there are the two unignorable giant commerical enterprises within walking distance. WALMART and HABIB's ISLAMIC BOOKSTORE. One could happily live in that area just for those two, forget IMO! (Submitted on December 13, 2007)
Masjid Dar Us Salaam: ★★★★ I have been to Masjid Dar as-Salam a couple of times for prayer, it is quite large and situated in the very heart of Thorncliffe Park. Right across the street is Iqbal Foods, the largest Islamic grocery store in this Solar System. Dont know much about the masjid politics, but I do know that Throncliffe Park is packed with Muslims like frogs in the rainy season. They are every where, phew. (Submitted on December 13, 2007)
Jamia Islamia Canada: ★★★★ Jamia Islamia is a large warehouse building close to the busy Dundas/Hurantario intersection in Mississauga. Its a little hard to find being in an industrial park drive out of the way. It has two Juma Khutbas and has a decidedly desi feel to it. Maulana Sahib speak eloquent urdu every Friday and wear this huge quaid-e-Azam style topee (cap). Large space and separate women's area. Plenty of parking. (Submitted on November 28, 2006)
ISNA Canada: ★★★★ ISNA Center is this grand mosque one cannot miss while driving along the QEW West of Toronto. I ve been there briefly once, it is a full-service major islamic center and has all kinds of activities and social functions etc. A bit out in the suburbs and too far from the city though. Has a big bookshop there too. (Submitted on November 28, 2006)
Talim ul Islam Community Centre: ★★★★ I ve been to Talim-ul Islam briefly to visit their famous bookshop. Did not go inside to the masallah area for prayer. It is located out of the way in an industrial area close to Sheppard and Weston Roads in North York, maybe a 10 minute drive from TARIC mosque. Its a small mosque, but the bookshop is famous all over town for selling books below cost. People come and walk away with boxes full of books for less than $50. (Submitted on November 28, 2006)
Taric Islamic Centre: ★★★★ As a regular at TARIC, it is a great non-intrusive islamic center, if you are looking for trouble or help or a lecture on adab, it may not be for you, but if all you want is to come pray, it is a nice mind-your-own-business type place. Not too many Muslims live nearby, so it is kind of a commuter islamic center, where people are around only when events are taking place, which is pretty much on weekends only. It is run by a tight knit group of Guaynese and Trinidadian Muslims, you will not find any trouble-makers in the masjid administration. Although everyone is welcome in the congregation, which is mostly a good mix of Muslims from all over. Mostly Somali families, Arab working class bachelor types, few Bangladeshi activists, and alhamdulillah very few of the arrogant Desi type subarbanites or those pseudo salafist intolerables. Imam is a classic moulvi type, ceremonial, big eater, arrogant, and condescending. Good with the insiders, but unhelpful to stangers. I suppsoe in keeping with the times. Studied Arabic in some Muslim lands, and is always kissing up to Arab people and downright rude to Desi people who do not speak his adopted language. Which may not be a bad thing I suppose. Khutbas are often great, we have public persona Dr. Masri, eloqunt Imam Abdool Hameed, and Egyptian firebrand Shaykh 'oops, I forget his name' as regular khateebs. Clean and well run islamic center with several good family events held regularly year around. (Submitted on June 17, 2006)
Madina Masjid: ★★★★ Madinah masjid is the de facto headquarters of the all-powerful, universal and ubiqtuous Jamat-e-Tableegh. If you are not a regular to the masjid, you will immediately become aware that you are being watched and observed silently. I assume as a potential recruit for the jamat. Or am I being neurotic here! That aside, the men's area is very spacious and well-organized with good wudu facilities. A very open large sunny main hall to pray in. Surrounded by many Islamic shops and Muslims everywhere in sight in the neighborhood. (Submitted on June 17, 2006)
Islamic Society of Baltimore: NR I used to be a regular at ISB some years back. It is masha'allah a good multicultural community serving a wide range of Muslims. What I like about ISB is its lack of prentensions, which I guess goes with anybody who cares to live in Gotham City aka Baltimore. Or shall we say is forced to live in. Due to its prmoximity to DC, often celebrity guest speakers show up out of the blue. Like Dr. Israr Ahmed, Anwar al-Awlaki and many others. (Submitted on June 17, 2006)
Masjid Toronto: ★★★★★ Masjid Toronto is a blessing from Allah. Located dead in the middle of downtown it is a pofessional two-story bank building that now serves as a masjid. It is very clean and elegant inside, decor is actually VERY nice. Thick plush rug carpet, newly made restrooms, and a VAST collection of classical Arabic books make up the central floor. Staff are a bit condescending and unhelpful, unless you are suited booted and look like someone with donation potential. But that is forgiveable given the amount of money needed to pay off this super-nice facility in a prominent location, right behind the Greyhound Station and the Hospital complex. It offers two-Friday prayers which is a God sent, although I find the khutbahs utterly boring and dry everytime I go there. (Submitted on June 17, 2006)
Downtown Mosque: ★★★ Downtown Mosque is actually a masallah, and not a mosque proper. It is like many restaurants one comes across where the proprietor has redone the basement into a masallah to allow people a place to pray. In this case, the owner of the clothing store on the ground floor has dedicated the entire 2nd floor to the cause of Islam. It has limited bathroom facilities, but boasts a packed ouse Juma'a khutbah every week and is basically 2 min. walk from Ryerson Univ. A group of dedicated poor and working class regulars ensure that 5-times daily prayer is held day-in day-out. (Submitted on June 17, 2006)
Muslim Community Center: ★★★★ I cannot believe i get to be the first to review MCC! Which is one of the oldest and most prominent of masajid in Chicago. A decidedly working class Islamic Center in a city choke full of suburbs and resulting elistist professional class of Muslims and their suburban pseudo masajid-catering centers-exercise clubs. When you go to MCC, you literally feel like you are in some big mosque in some third world Muslim country. The people are abrupt and quick tempered, the khutabahs have a tinge of firebrand to them and everybody is universally treated with disdain by the harried staff. (Submitted on June 17, 2006)
