Waterloo Masjid: ★★ When I first started going to this Mosque, the women were allotted half of the top floor, a room on the main floor and a basement area. Since then the space has has been reduced to the main floor and the basement, with the possibility of loosing either area if male numbers demand. The Libraries in the women's section are lacking in verity and the books are often in bad shape. There are programs such as learning Qur'an and Halaqas, but they tend to be sparatic and poorly advertised. Iftars are alright but not great, and outside of Jummah and the odd times classes are held, the women's entrance is locked. Overall, not a very sister friendly Mosque. (Submitted on June 20, 2012)
Noor Cultural Centre: ★★★★★ Agreed, this is not a Masjid for conservative Muslims. Not the exclude, but if you are uncomfortable with non-segregated spaces, this is not the place with you. The lectures, although very much anchored in Traditional Islamic concepts (I have never once heard the Aga Khan mentioned), do sometimes engage "controversial" topics such as women leading prayer and Gay rights. Most often, they are about mundane topics such as love, faith ect. While for some this is nightmarish, for others (myself included) this inclusiveness is much needed. The Khutbahs are engaging and fascinating and the guest lecturers are often leading academics. The Jummah is side by side, yet, there is a space of about five feet between the men and women, egro, the sexes are not "touching" during Salat. The Washrooms are very clean and well maintained. An added bonus to an already great experience is (outside of Ramadan) Jummah is always followed by a very tasty pot luck lunch! (Submitted on June 20, 2012)
Ottawa Main Mosque: ★★★ The restrooms were clean-at least in the women's area. The women's section wasn't bad either-were on a balcony above the main hall. The Khutbah could be heard clearly. This was not the most "sister friendly" masjid I've been to, but by far not the worst. The Khutbah was interesting and relevant, although I have heard better. All in all, it was a satisfactory experience, just not much above average. (Submitted on June 19, 2012)
Sarnia Muslim Association Mosque : ★★★ Not to sound patronizing, but it is a very cute Mosque! The bathrooms and wudu facilities are the cleanest in any Mosque I've been in! The main hall is segregated by a curtain down the middle, and events such as iftars are segregated to. This may not sit well with some, but the separation is not as austere of strictly enforced as in other Mosques I've been to. Furthermore, the people are very friendly and community events are plentiful. (Submitted on June 19, 2012)
