| International Muslims' Organization of Toronto: ★★★ i usually only go to this masjid when i'm in the area. i'm not too fond of it due to the amount of free-mixing that goes on during events like fundraisers and lectures. it is one of the larger masjids in the toronto area, with a large and spacious musallaa for the men. the sisters pray to the rear of the musallaa and are separated by a 3-4' high wooden dividing wall. the washrooms and wudoo' areas are nicely constructed and are usually kept clean - unlike many other masjids. | Salahuddin Islamic Centre: ★★★ the masjid has gone through a number of renovations. the picture above is kind of outdated. i'm not sure about the sister's section, but i know that the brother's musallaa has had new carpet installed since the last time i've been there (which was a year or so ago). the masjid is usually packed to capacity for jumu'ah. washrooms can get filthy very quickly and are almost always wet. masjid regulars are mostly of the ikhwaanee type. | The Qur'an & Sunnah Society of Canada: NR the masjid is easy to find if you follow the directions given on the QSS website. there is also a big sign high above the entrance to aid finding it.
with the recent renovations the centre's gone through the moisture problem mentioned in ruhafsa's review has been dealt with. washrooms and a couple of other rooms have been added, and there are more changes to come, inshaa'allah. being that this masjid is fairly new, the fact that there will be certain issues that need to be resolved should be expected. these issues are being dealt with as opportunities present themselves.
as for the masjid's demographics, being that the pharmacy & lawrence area has a fairly sizeable number of muslims living and working in it, the jamaa'ah that frequents the masjid is made up of brothers and sisters who live and work in the area, so ruhafsa's depiction of the masjid being "one of those masajid frequented by brothers working in the area rather than a community mosque" isn't entirely accurate. and i don't know what not being an adherent to the salafi methodology would have anything to do with why you would come to this masjid or not... most of those who frequent the masjid are common everyday muslims who don't really ascribe themselves to any "movement" or "madhhab".
information on classes, lectures and other programs can usually be found on the QSS website. classes are usually held friday through sunday but are currently on hold due to ramadan.
(note: the no rating is due to my being affiliated with the masjid). (Submitted on October 28, 2005) |
