Grenada Islamic Foundation: ★★★★★ The mosque is a one-room building, but has a lively close-knit community surrounding it. Children's islamic classes and hifz program is offered. (Submitted on September 6, 2012)
Turkish Islamic Cultural Center: ★★★★ This is a storefront mosque, and you'd walk past it if you didn't spot the two-foot high sign in front of the curtain in the window. Inside is a somewhat small prayer room with very nice-looking minbar and enclosed pulpit, unusual for a mosque in America. There's no women's area that I can see. (Submitted on March 11, 2010)
Bellevue Hospital Muslim Prayer Room: ★★★★ This mosque is a little bit small, about the size of an apartment, but is in a very good location. It has a nice minbar, good sound and qurans for people to read. Hospital security may check large bags, but usually let everyone in without a fuss. Try to come early as it fills up. I'm not sure its hours though. (Submitted on January 28, 2009)
Madina Masjid: ★★★★ Alhamdulilah, this is a pleasant masjid. You can find a number of people inside at any given time, and there's Qur'ans and plenty of books in Bangla. This masjid has a large but not exclusive Bangladeshi community. (Submitted on October 23, 2005)
Stony Brook University MSA: ★★★★★ I found the Stony Brook MSA to be a great asset to the college. If you're traveling, you can stop in. They also have real wudu stations, saving people the embarrassment of using a regular sink in the bathroom. (Submitted on October 4, 2005)
| Afghan Islamic Center: ★★★★ This masjid is rather small, but very friendly and has a really good community of families and individuals who help one another. The building is showing its age; it gets quite cold in the winter, somuch so that you need a jacket during the tarawih. However, it has a large crowd for Jummah (khutbas in Pashtu and English), iftars every night in Ramadan, and a hafiz annually for the tarawih prayers. Stop by sometime after maghrib or Isha and the men will offer you tea. The downside is that the women's area is fairly small, and I've been told offers poor sound and heating. | Islamic Center of the Capital District: ★★★★★ ICCD is perhaps the main masjid for Albany, though it holds fewer people than the others. It has a full-time Imam who offers weekend lectures and appears sometimes in the local newspaper when asked about issues concerning Muslims. It's across the street from an Islamic elementary school, and a halal grocer. The community is friendly and diverse, and the masjid feels overall welcoming. (Submitted on August 16, 2005) |
Masjid as-Salaam: ★★★ Masjid As-Salaam is a simple storefront mosque, with a relatively large musallah that holds large amounts of people for Jummah. It's clean and holds a large collection of Islamic books. Also, it's adjacent and across from 2 Halal food stores. The community is friendly, and while it's multicultural, I think it has a higher African-American population. (Submitted on August 16, 2005)
Islamic Center at NYU: ★★★★★ ICNYU is a well-organized MSA, one that is more active than average I'd say. It's open to the public, so Muslims in the area occasionally drop by for the prayers. It's a fairly large MSA, there is a large hall used for Jummah and iftars, which draw well over 100 people. On regular days, you will find about a dozen Muslims more or less for the evening prayers, alhamdulilah. The MSA is active, and holds events and connects with the other MSAs in the city. (Submitted on August 16, 2005)
Masjid Darul Quran: ★★★★★ I find the masjid to be a very nice and clean house of worship, with a number of dedicated families who make it a welcoming place. It's growing, so much so that it's now moved next door to an even larger building, and now is planning on opening an Islamic elementary school. (Submitted on August 12, 2005)
