| United Muslim Masjid: NR Update: Imam Luqman is no longer the imam at this masjid (though he remains active in other projects in the Philly area). (Submitted on January 25, 2006) |
| Islamic Society of San Francisco: ★★★★★ Update: this masjid has been fabulously redesigned, with a spacious prayer area with plenty of space for brothers and sisters. I am very impressed with the initiatives being championed by the leadership and see big things for this masjid. i am excited by the work they may be able to do in the Tenderloin area insha Allah. | United Muslim Masjid: ★★★★★ I have been going to this masjid for taraweeh and I feel right at home. Imam Luqman Ahmed (formerly imam of a masjid in Sacramento and frequent speaker at Zaytuna) really is a great leader for the community and very knowledgeable masha Allah. I enjoy his post-4-rakat taraweeh talks and I think others do too. The masjid is clean and warm. It is surrounded by several centers/businesses run by Muslims. These institutions are helping develop that part of South Philly. (Submitted on October 30, 2005) |
| Muslim Community Association (MCA): ★★★★★ One of the largest masajid in the United States, and one of the best organized. Masha Allah they do a lot of activities, driven in large part by a dedicated, action-oriented exec board as well as a full-time program manager and a part-time dawah director. Full disclosure: my dad used to be on the board. But I sincerely feel that the above comments still hold true, and I am sure others will attest to this. One downside: because the community is so huge, it has lost a lot of the personal feel, where people come up to you if you are new and ask you if you need help. That doesn't happen too much anymore. | Masjid al-Jamia: ★★★ One of the largest masajid in Philadelphia. It was started by alumni of the University of Pennsylvania, which is a few blocks away. The leadership seems to be trying to reach out to the community and do some family-friendly activities, and I pray that this is expanded in the future. I pray that the masjid is able to bring someone in permanently who speaks English fluently to relate to the students and children in the community. (Submitted on August 14, 2005) |
