I like good clean masjids with huge open windows for lighting and ventilation. People should be open-minded to ALL Muslims of absolutely ANY theological or ethnic background. Even if you don't have money for anything else, regular educational activities is a must for both adults and children. Everyone should interact and at least say Salaam to each other despite any differences. Imam must be fluent in both Arabic and English so that everyone understands what he's talking about. Must also have a good library of authentic Islamic books in English and other languages.  Member since November 29, 2009

Islamic Center of Hayward: ★★★★ I attend Jumu'ah here about once or twice a month. The speech is in Afghani (Pushto?), and the Mu'adhin sits at the back right-hand corner and translates but his English isn't very good and you have to strain your ears to hear him. I love the light and ventilation in this place. The side walls are lined with huge windows which are open during the day. I absolutely love it like that when I'm praying! Their parking is really big, and they start Jumu'ah at around 1:45pm so if you are late going to A St or Gading you can go here instead and will reach in time. I haven't seen any regular classes in English on Friday or any other day, but sometimes the Jamaat Tableegh brothers come and speak, and they go to people's houses and bring them to the Masjid and one of them stands up and speaks on Deen/Da'wah/Tableegh etc. I've been with them twice over there but none of them seem to be qualified to teach any more than you or me. It would be nice if the Imam/Khateeb gave English classes because he appears to know English. Overall nice place, with great potential for improvement. (Submitted on June 7, 2010)
Alameda Muslim League: ★★★★

Demographics:
Them majority of people who I see here are either from Fiji or Yemen, but I also see some Afghani and Indian/Pakistani brothers, and occasionally some from Palestine, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Denominations:
Appears to be quite open to people of diverse theological schools. Most of the Fijian brothers appear to be Deobandi (Jamaati) or Bareilwi (Milaadi), and most of the Arab and some Fijian brothers are Salafi/Ahl-ul-Hadeeth, and all of them appear to get along really well.

Languages:
The Jumu'ah Imam/Khateeb (either Deobandi or Bareilwi) only speaks in Urdu (no translation service), but the Shaykh who conducts Thursday's Tawheed class gives it in English, and so do the teachers who conduct the Sunday Qur'an/Islamic Studies classes for children.

Facilities:
They don't have a separate ablution facility so you have to use the restrooms, but they are clean. They have chairs for old/sick people to sit and pray. I think they clean and vacuum every Thursday or Sunday. Women's prayer section is separate but the main entrance to the place is one. Everything is on ground level so wheelchair access shouldn't be any problem.

Parking:
Entrance and parking is in the rear. I haven't counted but there's space for maybe 3 dozen cars.

Education:
They have Tawheed class for adults on Thursdays after Ishaa for 15-20 mins, and Qur'an & Islamic studies classes for children on Sunday. They also have Qur'an classes for adults on Thursday between Maghrib & Ishaa and sometimes I see them on Sunday after Zuhr. Arabic language teaching is also available but I don't think anyone is interested!!
They don't have a fully functional library, but apart from the mushafs (of course), they have copies of Sahih al-Bukhari, one incomplete copy of Tafsir Ibn Kathir and some other books. The "Tawheed Shaykh" also has a library of English/Arabic books at his home that he lends out.

Summary:
Overall, a very nice, cohesive and open place with potential to improve. The only thing I really don't like at the moment is the Jumu'ah speech which is not in English so a lot of us don't understand.

Masjid Omar al-Farooq: ★★★★★ I've been to this place some years back when Shaykh Yoonus Katharda was Imam. (not sure of spelling). I was totally impressed by their beyond-awesome library. The Imaam and Khateeb spoke in English. (Submitted on May 22, 2010)
