Fox Valley Muslim Community Center: ★★★★ Alhamdu Lillah, a great little masjid for Friday khutbah. The masjid is clean and well organized (even if it takes a while for the khutbah to start). There is one big open space for prayer - men in front, women in back. The khateebs are consistent, even if they have different styles. Even if I don't agree with their points, they are light years away from the isolationist, fire-and-brimstone khutbahs heard elsewhere. More often than not I leave this mosque feeling good, which is something I cannot say for other mosques in the area. (Submitted on June 28, 2005)
Islamic Center of Naperville: ★★ A difficult place to pray. The property is a former ranch house that gets crammed to the gills on Friday - it gets stuffy and uncomfortable. The women's area is practically nonexistent and is pretty much a closet; it is closed off so that women cannot see the khateeb. Despite repeated entreaties by mosque management, worshippers still end up parking their cars in front of neighbors' mailboxes and driveways. This has lead to rocky relations with the mosque's neighbors in the past. A lot of this could be resolved by finding a larger space. The mosque has tried twice in the past to buy land and construct a mosque but both efforts have failed (even though they actually bought land once). The complete reasons for this failure are uncertain. Additionally, in private I have heard grumblings by regular mosque members about some of the policies of the mosque. In particular, there is a rule that you cannot be on the mosque's board of directors if you have a conventional mortgage. (Submitted on June 28, 2005)
Islamic Foundation: ★★★ The masjid is well run as an organization. Things more or less get done. Friday khutbas have been inconsistent. There is no full time imam, so the khutbas generally are of three types: 1) Khateebs from masajid around Chicago who rotate from masjid to masjid, with their different styles and viewpoints 2) Out-of-town khateebs who come to give a khutba and then hit up the congregation for money for their cause 3) High School khateebs (who have graduated from the masjid's qur'anic classes) - they generally are given the less well attended second jum'a session. Additionally, you can count on the masjid to ask you to donate to the school they are building, and to remind you of how bad the public schools are in doing so. (Submitted on June 23, 2005)
