Masjid Toronto: ★★★★ This is probably the best masjid that I've been to. I'm a regular, so I see how it operates on a daily and weekly basis. The members of the masjid, as well as its administration, work very well with the community, and provide support for its most vulnerable members. Although the decor may not be perfect, the atmosphere in the masjid is; it's very calm and peaceful. And I don't find the sisters' area dingy at all; just well-used. There's also a great sense of brotherhood and sisterhood in the masjid; I found it very welcoming the first time I ever visited it. I guess first impressions depend on whether the regulars are there to help out new/visiting/passerby Muslims or not. As for the comment about members being solely interested in those who have money, I found that not to be true at all. In fact, the masjid helps out the poorest in the community in finding proper accommodation and meeting their immediate material and spiritual needs. Plus, the masjid does a lot of fund-raising for many different events, institutions, and venues in the Muslim community, not just for the masjid itself (i.e. see it's current campaign for the Olive Grove School for Muslim children). Since it has so many attendees, especially at Jumu'ah, why wouldn't the administration try to use the opportunity to help build new institutions to provide more services in our community? The Muslims in the GTA and Canada desperately need it. (Submitted on July 4, 2010)
Toronto Islamic Centre: ★★★ This is a nice little Musalla that provides for the immediate need of a place to make salah in the area. You can tell that the Masjid was established in a bit of a haphazard fashion, however, all attendees are quite nice, it provides quite a number of programs, particularly for children, and a lot of Islamic and Dawa materials for at-cost prices. The only thing that could be improved is the space for sisters, as only a few can fit behind the curtain at a time. However, given the restriction of space for the masjid, it's not surprising that there isn't more space for everyone. (Submitted on July 4, 2010)
Fatih Mosque: ★★★ I just stopped by this masjid the other day because I needed to pray 'Asr, and I was afraid that this would be one of little masajid that have no place for sisters to pray. But I was wrong; the masjid has a large room on the second floor for the sisters that seems to also serve as a multi-purpose room (there were tables with chairs set up for iftar). It also had places to hang coats, decent washrooms, and a small library as well. However, my only concern was that if the men use this area to eat, where do the women go? Therefore, I'm not sure if this masjid has free-mixing or not. Nevertheless, it was well-maintained, and seems to be very community-oriented. (Submitted on August 30, 2009)
