| Masjid Muhammad: ★★★★★ Every Masjid has its up and downs. This Masjid has a lot of possitive things going for it. Clean, very friendly (you give salams and people return them), good food, khutbahs and lections that relate to our situtaion in America. Not anti American and NOT pro American either. They are VERY PRO community. Men and woemn sit in the same room but sit separatly. On the down side- the juma can be a bit long. You shouldh ave a enjoyable time there. It's majority African American but juma is very mixed. (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| ADAMS Center: ★★★★★ Before they built the new masjid I attened the rental spot the used in a shopping mall. It was very nice, and the youth activities for boys and GIRLS was impressive. In the new Masjid the actually share the gym with the sisters. It is a MYNA/MSA/ISNA crowd but they aren't hard core. They are very professional and how programs that fit the needs of the diverse community they represent. They are clearly one of the best if not the best Masjid in the DC/VA/MD area because of there professionalism and aggressive efforts to include the women of there masjid in the dicision process. | Masjid ush-Shura: ★★ The people are nice. Its really a few families that got together and started a masjid for themselves so they could hold juma. Its most African American and men and women sit in the same room but segregated. It could be much much better. However, I think they are trying to work with what they have. May Allah SWT reward them for there efforts. (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| Islamic Center of Washington DC: ★ They have 30-40 Min juma in Arabic and 5 mins English translation. Before they built the shack next to the masjid for the over flow of women. Women use to and still do go around the back, down into the basement, where they sit on straw mats. It is not air conditioned, the sound barly works, and its near bathrooms. Mean while the men sit upstairs on plush Turkish carpets. Non Muslims can visit the masjid and walk around with there shoes on in the masjid during non peak hours but Muslim women can't sit upstairs? Interesting (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| Muslim Community Center: ★★★ It's ok. It use to be better before the the nationalistic issues were brought into play. It use to be much more diverse. Over time certain groups of people moved into the community and became the majority and push the agendas of there nationa and tribe which i guess is human nature. It's just that it makes other people feel they aren't particularly welcome. It is a nice masjid and the didnt always have the sisters blocked off. If wouldn't be that big of a deal if they had a tv up or something during Ramadhan so the sisters can follow the prayers better. They have plenty of parking and right off a major road. | Al-Huda School: ★★★ They have a lot of activities which is great. However, they still need to work on there non muslims relationship skills. I sent my non-muslim aunt there because she was interested in putting her son into a good school with some structure. When she went to school to discuss enrollment no one would talk to her. She tried to talk to serval women and men and no one would say a word to her. She was finally address by a offical at the school who in so many words made it clear that her son is not welcome there. It effectivly crushed all my dawa intentions toward her. She wasn't really upset about it but more hurt at the way she was treated. She simple just didn't understand why. I hope that since then they have reassed how they treat non muslims. You never know you might have distroyed a perfect oppurtunity to give some great dawa. Now can any of us afford to miss out on that? (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| Islamic Center of Southern California: ★★★★ I went to this masjid while I attened college> I felt it was very nice, people spoke to you if you gave salaams and it have a diverse atmosphere. The Imam at the time (1996) was very friendly. Its very clean and plenty of space for sisters. (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| Islamic Cultural Center of New York: NR I went to the masjid one time. You can't help but to be impressed by the architecture of the place. Clean bathrooms and the sisters space during non juma days is decent. (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam: ★★★ I did a tour of this masjid about 2 years ago. The seemed very nice and professional. Plenty of space for the sisters and a very friendly atmosphere. (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
| Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center: ★★★ Its a prety building. women have to go around the back. The entrance is by the hugh trash dumpsers and bushes. Its not well lite back there and women with children will fine it hard to get in contract with your husband if your ready to leave or vice versa. Women ARE not ALLOWED to serve on the Board. The Masjid is very diverse but the board diffiantly doesnt reflectthe diversity of the community. They have tried to change some things after 9-11 I think for the better. They are much more involved in the community and have finnaly understood the importance in getting involved in local politics. This community I think will do great things with the next generation. This really a transitional time for them in so many respects. Sister should know that you might recieve a word or two if you don't come in a Jilbab. (Submitted on June 16, 2005) |
