When our friends Bassam Tariq and Aman Ali came to us with an idea for exploring 30 mosques in New York City boroughs during the 30 days of Ramadan, we were only too happy to help. Their project was based on the idea that many Muslims rarely stray out of their comfort zones to explore how other Muslims from other racial, cultural, or sectarian backgrounds celebrate one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. It's a concept we have shared as we've tried to introduce mosque-goers to the variety of mosques in their area beyond those they may be familiar with. As Tariq and Ali began documenting their journey - using salatomatic and zabihah.com to highlight mosques and restaurants - they began attracting significant media attention from the likes of NY1 TV, NPR, Canada's CBC and websites Boing Boing, Sepia Mutiny, and Global Voices. For those of you who spend more time here than at our sister site for halal restaurants, zabihah.com, you might think that you'd like the same functionality for mosques - finding them from your GPS-enabled mobile phone - that you'll find for halal restaurants on our new zabihah iPhone app. Well, take another look. Our zabihah for iPhone app, which has been available since early June, also includes full functionality for mosques, meaning you can also find the nearest mosques to your location. Even better than that is the release this month of version 1.5 of zabihah for iPhone, which adds over a dozen new features, including logging into your account, adding reviews, listings, and photos, or editing existing information, all for the low price of $0.99. There's also zabihahLite, the free version of our iPhone app, which has many of these features as well. (More here...)

Following on the heels of our successful iPhone application for zabihah.com, you can now point your Safari browser to i.salatomatic.com and look up mosque listings on your new iPhone!
Each listing includes a button to automatically call the mosque, plus a link to the internal Google Maps client and driving directions! You can save phone numbers and locations in your personal bookmarks as well. Works in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.
This is a beta release (ver 0.75) - it will be updated soon to allow you to leave reviews. Please let me know what else you'd like to see in our new iPhone client! (More here...)

We've received so many questions in the past few days, I thought it would be best to answer the most common ones here:
I can't find my mosque! What kind of site is this? It is a user-driven site that depends on you, dear reader, to help build and maintain the database. While we are busy adding mosques on our own (there are still about 500 mosques & schools that are being added by the salat-o-matic team over the next week, and we're aiming to go over the 1000 mark soon), if you don't see your mosque, you can add it and make our job a lot easier.
How do I add a masjid or school? Just navigate to the area where the masjid/school should be, then click on the "Add Mosque" link in the upper right corner.
What kind of review should I leave? Try to be as constructive as possible - this site is meant as a positive resource for Muslims and the institutions that serve them. Overly harsh or critical reviews, with sweeping generalizations, slurs, or accusations, will be removed. Also, this is not a place for theological debate.
Please make sure to read our FAQ for more answers to your pressing questions. (More here...)

Assalamu alaikum, and welcome to salat-o-matic - an editable database of mosques and Islamic schools anywhere in the world where Muslims are a minority! Based on the same review engine as zabihah.com, this site is meant to help you find the Muslim institutions in your area that meet your needs. Our purpose is to keep our community resources accountable to those they serve, by having honest reviews about facilities, activities, and quality of service. But we can't be a success without you! Please add the institutions in your area to our growing database, and review the ones in your area, so that salatomatic.com can become a valuable resource! (More here...)

The basic structure of salat-o-matic is now done, and we need your help! We'll be spending the next few weeks adding more than 1000 mosques to the database, and you can help by doing one of two things: adding mosques in your area that aren't already on our database, and editing mosques already in the database to include information we don't have yet. Thank you for participating in the closed beta release of salat-o-matic. Now that the initial coding has been completed, we need you to make sure everything works all right, including the record submission & editing features, as well as the site navigation. Make sure that mosques and schools are listed in their proper area, and check for duplicates. Report all bugs to us here. Thank you in advance for all your help! (More here...)
